See how the street play movement is growing across the UK

We’re adding a pin for every area where parents, residents, a community organisation or the council (and ideally, all of them together) are starting to change things for children through play streets and related ideas. The movement is growing! See what’s happening near you by entering the name of your local authority (council) in the box below. Tell us if you want to get something started in your area – or if there’s anything to add to our map!

What’s happening in Bristol?

Bristol is where Playing Out first started in 2009, with two neighbours deciding to try to change their street for play (for more background read the Playing Out story).

Now over 165 streets and estates have ‘played out’ (as of June 2019) and most have been granted a Temporary Play Street Order,  which lets residents open their street for play up to 3hrs a week.

If you live in Bristol and are interested in getting your street playing out, we can help. As well as the general phone and email support we offer to residents across the UK, we can lend you the cones and signs you need to close your road safely and provide a kit bag to help it run smoothly.

We may also be able to put you in touch with other local ‘playing out’ organisers, who can give you some moral support. The Bristol Facebook group is a great way to share ideas and experiences with other people who are ‘playing out’ in Bristol. You can also read resident activator stories, like Ellie’s here.

If you need any other help or support please email us on, phone us on 0117 9537167, or pop in and see us!

Since we started, Playing Out has been featured in Bristol media including ITV West to raise awareness of the benefits of street play to children and communities.

Here are some great shots of local streets playing out!
